A very Long story about my interview.

i am seriously glad that the interview is over. and i think it went quite well. Thank You God ;)

i left out one of the documents and i will be not interviewed if i don't have that paper. Thank God there's this specky boy with my type of 'tigerish' canine doing his practical in the Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah and he helped me to search from the JPA website and print out the pages. It saved me the trouble of walking to the nearby cyber cafe. I truly appreciated his effort walking up and down trying to get it done for me. *awwwww*

i was the 6th person to be interviewed, the first among the 3 of us from my school. the night before, i was trying to remember some lines of the school song and the sabah song, at the same time trying to read a little bit more about the whatever NKRA, NEM, PIPP stuff... gosh...

My interview lasted for 30minutes. I went in to the room, there were two chairs. Now thinking back, i laughed at my stupidity for being indecisive of which chair to sit on, the nearer one, or the one further away from the interviewer. haha, whatever. The interviewer is quite a nice person and the way he interacted with me really helped me to be less nervous. He started off by asking me the meaning of my name. I was like, ok, and told him la the meaning of my name.

Jia stands for something that is good, something praise-worthy.
and Hui stands for wisdom, knowledge. *teehee*

Then he asked me to introduce myself. easy. done. then he jokingly asked me is it because i don't have good moral values that i got A2 for Pendidikan Moral and it became the spoiler of my SPM results. Haha. Of coz i have to give smart answers - i told him that the marking scheme of Pendidikan Moral is VERY STRICT. You can't get full marks even if you only missed out a single word or replaced the word with something else, and probably that's the reason i didnt get a A1 for it. Haha, I bet he was happy with that answer. the interview started in BM, then as usual there's a mixture of BM and BI, and in the end, most of the time we were speaking in english. *hallelujah*

I told him what subjects i teach in school. He asked me how are the form 4 students in their biology. So, of coz i answered him as honest as i can - they generally have no problem understanding the topics but they have great problem understanding the questions and giving accurate answers to the questions, simply because their english is not good enough.

By now, you can predict the next question he raised up: do you agree with the teaching of science and math in english?

Jia: Personally, i think PPSMI should be continue in secondary schools, if not all levels, because that provides a continuation for students as they move up to matriculation, form 6 and university. However, i must say that it's not easy, esp after comparing my experience here with those i had during teaching practice in SMK Sri Aman.

Haih, i think he is against PPSMI and he gave me his piece of mind, but in a good way. He said i was lucky to come from a good school *he knows how hebat my ipoh schools are*, did teaching practice in a High Performance School, and now teaching in residential school *which is supposed to be good, [emphasis added by me in my heart]*. And he commented on my english, saying that i have no problem in english although i was from chinese school and studied science and maths in BM.

Actually I do agree with him. Learning science and maths in english in a way does give negative effects on some students. It slows down their progress in those subjects. I realised this problem of PPSMI after i started teaching here.

Lalalalala... *gotcha, jia is trapped....*

Thank God i managed to cover that part by stating that i put in a lot of effort to work on my english and i have a few good english teachers, and the 6 years plus of PPSMI was not a wasted effort *gah, in one sense, it wasn't a wasted effort la* Indeed, the english teachers play a very important role and the students should also play their part by taking initiative to improve their english.

After some sharing of comments on PPSMI, he moved to current issues and we talked about students' discipline problems and moral issues. OK la that one. I told him my point of view, that kekuatan iman will bring good fruits, not bad fruits, and perhaps that is one of the areas we can try working on to curb the problems. Then he went on with the issue about smoking. I told him honestly that i find this disturbing - teachers in school discourage students from smoking and yet they are the ones smoking in the teacher's toilet. He agreed and said even the menteri-s are also like that. I made my last point by telling him ---- there are a few students who came and told me that they tried to encourage their parents to quit smoking, and perhaps that is a good start to all the effort done for anti-smoking stuff.

*done, i rest my case*

He smiled and agreed. He shook my hand, i thanked him and i walked out the room tonnes lighter than half an hour ago.

i need to calm down a bit

Be very careful, then, how you live -
not as unwise but as wise,
making the most of every opportunity
,
because the days are evil.
Eph 5:15-16

Jia is going for the interview by SPP. it's tomorrow morning.
I have been reading about NKRA, NEM, and some other issues here and there. Sigh. I don't like the idea of reading all this stuff just to pass the interview. Whateverlar. sigh.

Tuesday nights is my math 'tuition' night. I am trying all that i can to help that few students who are performing way below par. It's not easy because sometimes i just can't understand what is it that they don't understand. I am trying. Real hard.

Lately I have been kind of losing my patience, especially when it comes to explaining the steps to solve the math problem. sigh. same for Science and Bio. It's been quite tiring, seriously.

Seriously, one day i might erupt like a volcano. I hate the word 'blank'. Gosh. The students always say,
"Teacher, blank..."
*which means they DON'T UNDERSTAND A THING and they have learnt NOTHING*

In my heart, I was like... 'hey, kid, i tell you what, another 'blank' from you i will make sure you feel sorry for every 'blank' you uttered and whenever you fill in any blanks you will so be reminded of the sins you committed in Math. :p

I need to learn how to punish the students, how to rotan them.. etc. I can't believe how 'nice' i have been all this while.

Two more weeks to mid year exam. I need to start preparing the exam papers. I will be setting the Form 2 Math paper 1 and 2, and Form 3 Science paper 1. busy busy.

I should learn to make the most out of all the opportunities i can get throughout my days here. I am entering my 5th month in LD. It's been interesting I must say, although some of the days were pretty terrible, horrible and miserable.. *aha* but in many occasions, God has been speaking 'sense' into my heart and head, and this is encouraging.

and....

Cooking saves me *from the hell of school work*
;)

rest.

5 more weeks and i will be home. *teehee*.
3 more weeks. Mid year exam. Okies, probably in these coming weeks i will be busy 'fixing' some of the students who are not doing well. i seriously hope they won't do too badly in the exam. *roar*

1 more week. the interview. gah. i need to start preparing for it.

in this new world.

Indeed, everything seems calm and peaceful here but there's a lot of undercurrents.

tell me how to build bridges and cross culture if that problem still exists?
I didn't want to think that way but circumstances and human behaviour pushed me to that edge.

Secondly, Teknik Pembodekan.
It's like sweet talking and i can tell you the cantonese terms you have for this technique.

You have...
  1. Carry someone's big leg. So, if you like to carry your someone's big leg (particularly those with power and status), you are known as the big-leg-carrier. Nice name, right?
  2. Polish someone's shoes. You will be known as the shoe-polish boy and you polish someone's shoes til they become super shiny.
You still need some skills to carry out the above two. Well, you need to have a sweet-mouth-and-a-smooth-tongue, and you must always rinse your mouth with oil.

People just like to sweet talk their way up, don't they?

done.

i am truly glad that the Science Show is over.

The show went on quite well and i am happy with my students' presentation because they did their best and they enjoyed the whole experience - from deciding the science topics and the experiments to preparing for the day... Of course, they were nervous and stuttered a bit here and there... it's normal la. The best thing was, they showed themselves that they are able to overcome those problems. Selected or not, it doesn't matter a lot *at least personally. although i did feel some kind of stress due to expectations from here and there*. On my part, i could have done more. i could have been a little bit more committed than I already am. i could have.

Today is one of the jimo days.

I see your footsteps in the sand
As you journey on across this land
But if you should fall on your way
Then I will carry you that day
Cause I’m there
I’m there too
Yeah I’m there too

I see your face in mine
And I know there’ll come a time
When you will take my hand
And I will understand
That you’re there too
When you will take my hand
And I will understand
That you’re there
You’re there too
-Michelle Featherstone, I'm There Too-

In the process of building up more walls.
I need to retreat into my little world.

Next task - get ready for the darn interview.

it's friday and she's in the zombie mode

jia is still in school, 10.22pm

she went back to school after dinner to see the students trying out the coke-mentos geyser;
solved some math questions with the students;
chased after students for the extra exercises they are supposed to do.. esp those who got bad results for math and bio.

it's been a tiring week.

she's one week nearer to home.

perhaps she should change her mentality and live differently. positively differently.

science show on tuesday. die.

basketball practices will resume next week. yeah!

a lot of papers to mark.

i need a break.

i need a super high dose of perseverance.

now, here's an interesting explosion

I told you before I'm a Biology teacher, also a Science teacher, as well as a Math teacher. *gah*

So far, I have only had two experiments with the Form 4 students -- the first one was about plant cells, and the second one was about osmosis. And today I had the first experiment with the Form 3 students. We were supposed to do the experiments to determine the solubility of compounds and the reaction of a certain compounds with heat.

The solubility experiment - nothing to worry about la. They just needed to add distilled water into boiling tube that contains salts like iron oxide, copper carbonate, etc.

The best part of the whole experiment this morning was.. POP! EXPLOSION!

Honestly, I am that kind of freako who imagines what are some of the bad stuff that might happen in the given situations. And when it comes to heating chemicals, I am a little worried about that.. what if the chemicals explode, what if this happens, what if that happens..

It was my first lesson of the day. The students were supposed to heat the iron sulphide to produce sulphur dioxide gas which will turn the potassium manganate (VII) from purple to a colourless solution because the gas is acidic....

I assigned 3 groups of students to carry out that part of the experiment. First two groups started while the 3rd group was taking their own sweet time. Both groups had the same problem but one of the groups, I named it The Romans *because one of the boys named Roman*, had the best experience of the day where their boiling tube broke. *oh my god....*

Let me explain to you the situation.
Materials and Apparatus : you have a boiling tube that contains iron sulphide (i gave it a yellow colour), then the boiling tube is connected to the test tube via delivery tube. The test tube contains potassium manganate (VII) which is purple in colour. The delivery tube has to be in the purple solution so that gas will straight enter into the solution.

Observe the diagram, box #1:
The Romans set up the apparatus as it is shown in the diagram and began to heat the iron sulphide.
I was at the other table monitoring the other group. This group of girls was the first to start heating. They heat the iron sulphide and the sulphur dioxide gas was channeled into the potassium manganate (VII) solution. Then we decided to stop the fire. It was truly my mistake that I didn't FIRST remove the test tube that contains the purple solution BEFORE turning off the fire. I saw the back flow of purple solution up into the delivery tube and in my heart I was like *oh my god.. shucks....!!!!!!!!* Good thing was, I managed to move the test tube away before more potassium manganate can flow into the boiling tube to cause an explosion. SAVED.

But the Romans weren't that lucky.

Box#2: While I was busy saving the girls... the Romans started heating the boiling tube. They placed the Bunsen burner on a stack of books. I saw and of course I told them to take away the books lar...so, they shifted the books together with Bunsen burner, away!!!

Box#3:
And then I was in my *Oh my god* mode again!!
I saw the purple solution rushing into the boiling tube and I was like....

Oh nooooooooooooooooo....!!!

I told them to move the test tube away... but they were too stunned and slow to respond and.....and i quickly rushed to their table and tried to move the test tube and ...

POPPPPPPP!

Box#4
A piece of glass about 1cm diameter broke and popped out from the boiling tube and fell to the floor. Smoke began to form. Some of us began to cough because of the gas that was released and purple powder all on the table and retort stand. My oh my. Thank God no one was hurt and it was just a MINI explosion....

I can't stop telling them how lucky we were *if lucky is the right word*. I was kind of traumatised by the whole incident. And seriously, I am glad that I am not teaching Chemistry. I can't imagine that kind of fear that I will have to live with if I am a Chemistry teacher. :p

Well... that's the drama I had..
The other class was also supposed to do the same experiment. Haha, I just cut off the heating part. Poor kids can only do the part on solubility.

I am still traumatised by the whole thing, k..... sheeeeshhhh

something nice.

i should think of something nice to blog about. gah. that really squeezes my brain to the max.

school has been quite a disaster. some same old grandma stories about the kids.

probably i have been toooo nice to the students and they think i am easy to be bullied, or some easy piece of meat to take down. *roar*

~***~
The walk through the mangrove swamp on this small stretch of bridge and out to the beach was somewhat scary and creepy.

The other day i was wondering why we can't just rewind back to many years ago. then i realized i need to do myself some good and stop thinking about this rewinding thingy. well, for some obvious reasons, of course.

School was boring today. Ok, probably because there's nothing much going on after a week of monthly tests and i didn't do much to get anything going anyway. whatever. And probably because i had a bad week marking papers, balancing on the fine line that separates strict and lenient.

Great. There's school tomorrow, following the Friday timetable. I'll be starting the chapter on Land and Its Resources, which is about some geology stuff i learnt during uni days. Oh my, I have returned most of what i learnt to the lecturers. oh crap.

I am only returning the papers next week. Many students came to me and asked me about their math paper results. A handful of them did brilliantly well compared to their peers, and I am truly happy about that. Some, they came because they want to know the mistakes they did. They listened, and their light bulbs were lighted. They understood the reason they got low marks or failed the paper. Some, they came but are just plainly blinded by their own weaknesses in the subject (not only math) and yet still want to plead for marks which i can't and won't give. They are not interested in knowing their weaknesses and mistakes. They are only interested in getting a pass for the paper, or higher marks. One girl got 22 out of 50, which is equivalent to 44%, one more mark to pass the paper. She came to see me twice to beg for that 1% so that she can have a pass for math paper after failing it in the Feb test. I will never give her that one mark because she simply doesn't deserve it. She wouldn't get an E for math if only she had paid attention during lessons and 'repent' from the sins in doing math. Of course, there some who prefer to just wait til the day the teacher returns the papers to them, which is what i will do if i'm a student. gah.

Bio - i expected to get that kind of results because clearly, language is a problem to them. The students, not just students from my class, have problem understanding simple instructions like 'explain using an example of carbohydrate', 'factors affecting permeability of plasma membrane', 'precautionary steps in administering injection', etc. I marked their papers with a pretty merciful heart where i tried to understand their explanation and marks were given as long as they hit the point. A few from my class did quite well because they are the ones who pay attention during class and work hard to understand; and of course there is about 4 or 5 of them who totally flunked the paper and you can predict what kind of behavior they have during classes. I don't like to see students failing their papers, particularly the subject i love and teach. haha. But I must applaud one of the boys. He is really weak in english. I mean 'really' weak. His english is somewhere in primary school level and i was fearing that he will hand in just the question paper with no answers. Oh well, he answered the questions although not all. He passed the paper, even though with an E. In upper secondary level, E is still a pass, but not G. Oh there's another boy whom i need to constantly call his name during classes so that he won't go too deep in his dream land -- he got a B. That was a surprise to me. ;)

Science -- gah, if this kind of results came out for PMR.. i might be skinned alive.

A quarter at a time.

it's another week.

I felt that at this point of time, we really need to rethink what is worth fighting for, and what's not. I don't have the answer yet but I guess i needed to do this kind of reflection so that i won't go crazy and become a psycho or schizo or whatever after just weeks of teaching in school.

I can only say that we plunged into this system carrying hopes and dreams that are too idealistic for the system to handle.

Some of us have gotten quite badly wounded in less than four months. Yet, we are talking about giving ourselves a few years before getting out of it. Perhaps by then, we will be walking out of it like a zombie.

I did some kind of simple 'survey' recently. There are students who are happy with their life in residential school because they wanted/needed the protection against the big bad world out there, and they have a predictable life, and they don't need to trouble themselves with too much of changes in life. The only thing which troubles them currently is ... there's only one iron for all the female students. Probably more than 250 girls sharing one iron. Unbelievable! My disbelief is not about the darn iron. My disbelief is -- they are troubled not because of the dull routine of life and lack of positive competition and challenges, but the lack of darn freaking iron!! Do you feel my frustration here? Are you getting it? I was quite taken aback by their responses. Sigh!

It has been a pretty tough month..
that's an understatement, obviously.

I have finished marking the papers. Bio. Science. Maths. i shall refrain from commenting about it at the moment.

I have a good cop and a bad cop within my self.

Isn't it scary?

maybe i can be a chef

"maybe teaching isn't for me..
maybe I should go back and help my father in the restaurant..."

That line comes from a movie i watched some time ago. I can't remember what show was that but i kind of remember repeating that to rc, and some other people, i think. I actually jotted down that line in my MooLoo Cow notebook after the show.

argh.

Hmmm, there are two things i like being in LD. I love the foggy mornings. It can be really foggy and all, and that gives me some thrill to get up early. Second thing -- being a chef. I picked up cooking ever since i landed here. I get to experiment some new dishes, re-create the dishes served in my family restaurant and that really helps bringing my HOME to LD. I enjoyed preparing meals -- the cutting, the planning, and all that comes with cooking. That gives me some adrenaline rush and helps to reduce stress. haha. What a good way to cut off the stress after a day of dealing with *ahem* kids!

now we have gotten ourselves an induction cooker. there's going to be more fun coming. ;)
Next round, probably will get hold of some other stuff and start making some cool drinks. It's quite difficult to get them in LD. Well, and probably can try baking too! Meanwhile, i shall start keeping a record of the dishes i cooked - chinese and western. Isn't that awesome?

Oh well, I guess AFC and T&L have become my favourite Astro channels.

Life can be good in this place and wherever you are. As you want it to be.

Happy Easter!
