I came across this post. I am thinking the same thing. How many others out there are also being oppressed, exploited, and etc?
I saw Dr. Irene Fernandez' (Executive Director of Tenaganita) picture when I was browsing thru' some blogs which blogged about 10-Eleven Bersih rally. The picture of her brought me back to the sessions I went through during the 2 weeks of Social Work Exposure and Embracement Program(SWEEP), esp the one on Social Discriminations by Dr. Irene Fernandez. I remembered how she speaks with passion and hope, how she committed her life fighting for a cause she believes in, and the ups and downs she has to go through. It's truly encouraging to listen to such people sharing their life experiences and at the same time, challenges us to make a difference from where we are. One thing she said and it stayed with me.
If everyone is made in the image of God.
why social discriminations?
why social discriminations?

social equality has never been the case for us in this nation.to me the problem derives from economic disparity and ultimately government's incompetency(perhaps reluctance?) to fairly address this issue.
superiority and inferiority complex develop as a result and put us(esp helpless people) into further damnation.this is the era of "survival of the fittest", not "turning the other cheek".
human are more driven by ego.tv has succeeded in programming our minds telling us that we belong solely to ourselves;this is toxic individualism. men will do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo,the superiority.
there's no real solution to this otherwise we would have done that. and to be cynical, i would say equality is almost farcical in nature.well, that puts us into a hopeless position.
but of course we should not dwell in this self-destructing thoughts.our lives deserve a bit more of hope. let's be fair, when there's a will there's a way right?
so leaving the cynicism behind, i think that the heart of the problem is human self-centeredness a.k.a ego/pride.christians regard this as a deadly sin,and also something that we greatly disapprove.
Jesus is the answer.one writer puts it,"we should all be clear that the ultimate solution to humankind's problems is the gospel of Jesus Christ". the only advantage that we christian have, as C.S.Lewis puts it, is the understanding that we are the sinful creatures in this fallen world.
p/s:first time to drop a long comment in your blog, lol.anyway i'll be subscribing feeds for your blog. do think more(d'ink??) ok? take care
Hi Wong,
Thanks for leaving your comment. =)
Indeed, the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. A prideful heart. Some people who are in position of power(and *ahem ahem.. ) -- they crave for more of it, doing all sorts of things to keep their privileges and their dominance and control and exploitations over the invisibles - the poor, the neglected, the weak and so on so forth. We can be ignorant and indifferent for some time. But for how long? Where can we go from here if we kept on being like that?
'Survival of the fittest' vs 'turning the other cheek'. This got me thinking.

We'll walk the land with hearts of fire
And every step will be a prayer
Hope is rising, new day dawning
The sound of singing fills the air

Indeed, for many, our hearts are waiting, longing and aching for awakening once again...
Take care
